Synopsis
Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) is an American biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director John Frankenheimer built the film around Robert Stroud — a lifer held in solitary for killing a prison guard — who spent decades studying birds inside federal penitentiaries and wound up cited in ornithological literature. Stroud's world shrank to four walls and silence. Then a wounded sparrow landed in the exercise yard. He nursed it back, then another, then dozens more. With barely a third-grade education he documented bird diseases and developed treatments that eventually reached veterinary textbooks. Thelma Ritter plays his devoted mother, Karl Malden the warden who opposed his research, and a young Telly Savalas in one of his earliest notable parts.
