Synopsis

Early-1970s Los Angeles. Rudy sells records, sweeps the shop floor and keeps getting passed over on stage. So he invents a swaggering pimp character named Dolemite, packed with rhyming tall tales, and finally crowds start listening. With his comedy albums selling, Rudy gambles everything on shooting a movie about his alter ego, with no studio, no budget and a crew of friends learning filmmaking as they go. Wesley Snipes plays the diva director he hires; Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Keegan-Michael Key round out the gang.
This is the story of an outsider who refused to wait for permission. Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the team behind Ed Wood, the film is a warm tribute to a blaxploitation pioneer and gave Eddie Murphy one of his finest late-career roles.
