Serik is a quiet teenager with soft, almost girlish features, and the academy wants nothing to do with him. The other boys bully him, the principal strikes his name off the rolls, and only the rank of Serik's absent father gets him back through the gates. Then the boy starts to change. He gets pulled into an incident everyone is desperate to bury, and the old building seems to carry a guilt that isn't his. What happened inside these walls before — and why does no one say it out loud?

Yerzhanov has spent his career working the seam between parable and genre, and here he turns teenage cruelty into slow, suffocating dread rather than cheap jump scares.
