Synopsis
Harem (2018) is an Israeli drama series you can watch online on iFILM. Directors Gadi Taub and Marco Carmel built the show around a real criminal case: a self-styled spiritual healer in Tel Aviv who kept dozens of women in a single commune for years, bound by promises of miraculous cures.
Renamed Shabtai in the series, the cult leader is played by Alon Aboutboul as a soft-spoken man whose control is all the more unsettling for how quietly it operates. The story unfolds through Maayan, one of the women living inside "Beit Goel," and her slow realisation that faith and captivity can share the same address. Shira Haas is among the cast. Rather than playing the subject for shock value, the series works as a careful, unhurried study of how psychological dependence is built one small concession at a time.
