With the veil to Hell sealed, the Midnighters get a brief taste of calm. Then the lavish Crystal hotel opens its doors, and its owners — the witch Patience and the smooth-talking Kai — bring a quieter, deadlier kind of trouble. Hotel guests start turning up dead, Manfred digs into the killings, and a run of "accidents" closes in on Bobo until saving him costs Fiji a turn toward dark magic. The longer it runs, the darker it goes: this found family of misfits cracks from the inside, and the line between friend and enemy blurs. By the end, the town itself falls under the rule of dark witches.
