Synopsis
Permanent Midnight (1998) is David Veloz's addiction drama, free to watch online on iFILM. Ben Stiller stars as Jerry Stahl, a hotshot television writer punching out sitcom scripts while a heroin habit quietly eats his life from the inside.
On paper Jerry has it made. The paychecks, the green-card marriage to a producer played by Elizabeth Hurley, a baby daughter. None of it sticks. The needle costs him jobs, money and everyone who tries to stay close, and Veloz frames the whole thing as a confession told to a stranger in a roadside motel. Maria Bello, Owen Wilson and Janeane Garofalo round out the cast.
The film draws on the real Jerry Stahl's memoir — the writer himself turns up in a small role. Watching Stiller drop the comic mask for something this raw is the reason to stick with it: no clean-up arc, no tidy lesson, just one fix pulling in the next.
