Synopsis
Erik the Viking (1989) is a British-Swedish fantasy comedy you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Terry Jones, and starring Tim Robbins alongside John Cleese, Mickey Rooney and Jones himself. Jones adapted the film from his own series of children's books, drawing on Norse mythology for the setting.
Erik is a Viking who has grown tired of raiding and killing — which, in the Age of Ragnarök, makes him an oddity. He assembles a band of unlikely warriors and sails toward Valhalla to wake the gods and bring the sun back. Standing in his way are the local blacksmith Keitel Blacksmith, who has no interest in peace because war is his business, and the warlord Halfdan the Black, who has built his whole identity around bloodshed. The film plays it straight enough to make the absurdity land, which is the Python formula applied to Norse mythology with real affection.
