On 26 April 1986, reactor four explodes. The Soviet response is immediate and systematic: deny, minimize, control the information. Physicist Valery Legasov is sent to assess the situation and begins to understand how far the cover-up goes. Deputy Prime Minister Boris Shcherbina arrives to manage the official line and quietly becomes the person Legasov trusts most. Nuclear physicist Ulana Khomyuk works the cause independently and collides with a bureaucracy that fears the answer. Five episodes cover the explosion, the evacuation of Pripyat, the liquidation effort, and the tribunal where the truth comes out at cost.
