Synopsis
Truly Madly Deeply (1991) is a British romance with a ghostly twist, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Nina is falling apart after losing her boyfriend Jamie. Then he simply comes back — dead, but solid, picking up his cello in her flat as if nothing happened.
For a while it feels like a gift. The grief eases, and even the rats that overran her place clear out. But Jamie keeps acting odder by the day, inviting other ghosts over, fussing about the thermostat, hogging the sofa. Slowly Nina sees the truth: clinging to the dead is its own way of refusing to live. The film walks the line between funny and quietly devastating, and it barely wobbles.
This was Anthony Minghella's directing debut, five years before The English Patient, made for the BBC and carried by two actors and the silences between their lines. Alan Rickman has rarely been gentler. If you want a smart film about grief with no sugar, start here. Stream Truly Madly Deeply (1991) online on iFILM.
