Synopsis
Dance of the Forty One (El baile de los 41, 2020) is a Mexican historical drama directed by David Pablos — watch it online on iFILM, starring Alfonso Herrera as Ignacio de la Torre, son-in-law to President Porfirio Díaz.
Mexico City, November 1901. Ignacio moves comfortably in the highest circles of the Díaz regime: a congressman by day, a man with a carefully hidden private life by night. Behind closed doors, forty men gather in women's clothing for a party that no one was meant to know about. When police raid the house, the fallout cleaves straight along class lines — half the guests vanish quietly, the other half face public ruin.
The 1901 "Ball of the Forty-One" was a real scandal, suppressed as fast as the Díaz government could manage it. Pablos doesn't frame Ignacio as either villain or martyr — he's a coward shaped by a world that left him no good options, and that ambiguity is what makes the film linger.
