Season 1
Synopsis
The Tatami Galaxy (2010), Season 1 — watch online on iFILM. Eleven episodes of Masaaki Yuasa's cult anime about a Kyoto student who keeps living his college years over from scratch.
Our nameless narrator wants the "rose-colored campus life" everyone promises him. He never gets it. Each episode he joins a different circle — tennis, film, cycling, a shady secret society — and each time the scheming Ozu latches on as his personal black cupid. The loop resets, the rake stays in the same spot, the unreachable Akashi stays just out of reach, and the ramen-stand god of matchmaking keeps reminding him that nobody catches the bluebird of happiness for you. It plays as a kaleidoscope of comic failures at first. By the finale, that 4.5-tatami room swells into an endless maze, and underneath the absurdity sits a very real question about wasted time.
Animated by Madhouse from Tomihiko Morimi's novel, with Yuasa's machine-gun narration and elastic, color-drunk visuals. This season is for viewers open to a formally daring telling rather than a straight plot. Watch The Tatami Galaxy online on iFILM.
