Synopsis
The Tatami Galaxy (2010) is a Madhouse anime you can watch online on iFILM. A nameless third-year student at Kyoto University dreamed of a rose-colored campus life and ended up with two wasted years and a lonely rented room measuring four and a half tatami mats.
Blame Ozu, the gremlin of a friend who drags him into petty sabotage and torpedoes every shot at romance. The engineering girl Akashi is always within reach, yet he never makes a move. Then one night a fortune-telling old man at a ramen stall resets the clock, and the student picks a different club on day one all over again. Each episode is a fresh branch of the same spring. Each branch dead-ends in the same regret.
Director Masaaki Yuasa adapted Tomihiko Morimi's novel into something deliberately overwhelming: machine-gun narration, collage visuals, on-screen text that races past faster than you can read it. Eleven episodes from the noitamina block, unlike anything else in the catalogue — worth it for the form as much as for the story of a young man rerunning his own youth.
