Synopsis
A Countess from Hong Kong (1967) is a romantic comedy you can watch online on iFILM — Charlie Chaplin's final film as director, produced by Universal Pictures in Britain.
Sophia Loren plays Natasha, a stateless Russian countess stranded in Hong Kong who sneaks into the first-class stateroom of Ogden Mears (Marlon Brando), an American diplomat sailing for New York. Mears has a wife scheduled to meet the ship and a freshly signed presidential appointment as ambassador waiting at the destination. Natasha is a problem he cannot explain and cannot remove. Sidney Chaplin and Tippi Hedren round out the cast; Margaret Rutherford appears in a brief but memorable role.
Chaplin wrote the story in the 1930s with entirely different actors in mind and finally made it at seventy-seven. Critics were cool toward it and he never directed again. Watching it today feels like the close of an era — the last frame from the man who built the language of screen comedy. Stream A Countess from Hong Kong online on iFILM.
