Synopsis
Sunnyside (1919) is Charlie Chaplin's silent short — a comedy laced with romance you can watch online on iFILM. Chaplin both directs and stars, this time as a put-upon farmhand at the mercy of a brutish boss.
The Tramp herds cows, mops floors and absorbs plenty of kicks, then escapes the drudgery into daydreams about the village belle, played by Chaplin's regular partner Edna Purviance. Between the gags comes the famous dream sequence, a delicate dance among nymphs: in barely over thirty minutes Chaplin manages to be both funny and quietly sad. Long dismissed as one of his failures — the shoot dragged on painfully — the short is where you can watch the comedian reaching for the tenderness of his later features.
