Separation

Separation (2021) is an American horror film directed by William Brent Bell — watch it online on iFILM. Rupert Friend and Madeline Brewer lead the cast, with Brian Cox as a controlling grandfather who becomes part of the family's unraveling.

Jeff is a comic book artist who hasn't produced anything in a long time. His wife is seeking a divorce and sole custody of their daughter Jenny, and she isn't wrong to want it. Then she dies in a street accident, Jeff is left alone with the girl, and Jenny starts behaving like someone who isn't entirely alone either. She talks to empty rooms. Drawings from her father's old comics appear to come alive in the house. Jeff tells himself it's grief — until it clearly isn't. Child actress Violet McGraw carries a lot of the film's weight and handles it.

Bell made The Devil Inside and Before I Wake, so muted domestic dread is his territory. This one doesn't rely on jump scares — it builds slowly and stays close to the grief underneath the haunting, which makes it more unsettling than most of its genre peers. Stream Separation (2021) online on iFILM.
