Synopsis
Grand Prix (1966) is John Frankenheimer's racing drama — watch it online on iFILM, starring James Garner, Yves Montand, Toshiro Mifune, and Brian Bedford across 176 minutes shot on live Formula One circuits in Monaco, Monza, and Spa.
American driver Pete Aron (Garner) loses his ride after a crash at the Nürburgring and picks up a seat with a Japanese manufacturer. Around him: Jean-Pierre Sarti (Montand), a two-time champion quietly running out of reasons to keep doing this; and Scott Stoddard (Bedford), a Brit with something to prove after his own near-fatal wreck. The private lives — jealousies, affairs, exhaustion — run parallel to the season, and the track keeps shortening the odds for everyone.
Frankenheimer negotiated access to real pit lanes and cockpit cameras during actual championship rounds, then cut the footage into a split-screen spectacle that was genuinely new at the time. The editing, sound, and sound editing all took home Academy Awards. More than a racing film, it is a record of an era when the sport operated without meaningful safety margins — and the drivers knew it. Stream Grand Prix (1966) online on iFILM.
