Synopsis
The comedy Mambo Italiano (2003) is ready to watch online on iFILM. Émile Gaudreault's Canadian film centers on the grown son of Italian immigrants who can't quite bring himself to tell his loud family the truth.
Maria and Gino moved from Italy to Montreal back in the fifties and married almost on arrival, yet they never really settled into the new country. Their son Angelo is the whole point of their universe. He's an adult now, a rookie TV scriptwriter, and the day he announces he's moving into his own place sends them into quiet panic — living apart before marriage simply does not compute. The bigger secret he guards even harder: he's in love with his childhood friend Nino, a cop from a respectable family whom his parents take for nothing more than a roommate.
Luke Kirby plays Angelo with an easy, unforced touch, while Paul Sorvino and Ginette Reno turn the Italian household into a comic storm where volume stands in for argument. The tagline "Things change. Family doesn't." is less a joke than a diagnosis. The film works not because of the coming-out plot itself but because of a feeling anyone recognizes — the dread of facing your parents at the dinner table.
