Synopsis
M. Butterfly (1993) is a psychological historical drama directed by David Cronenberg — watch it online on iFILM. Beijing, the 1960s. French diplomat René Gallimard (Jeremy Irons) falls completely under the spell of Peking Opera star Song Liling (John Lone) and spends twenty years certain that he knows the person he loves.
He does not. Cronenberg adapts David Henry Hwang's award-winning stage play — itself drawn from a real 1986 French espionage case — as a slow-burn examination of what people choose to believe over what they can see. Gallimard constructs a fantasy rooted in Puccini's Madama Butterfly: a quiet, obedient beauty who exists for his projection of desire. What he never questions, the film does, methodically and without mercy.
Irons plays self-deception not as weakness but as an active, sustained act of will — which makes the unraveling far more unsettling than any conventional thriller. Stream M. Butterfly online on iFILM.
