Synopsis
Yucca Valley is a sun-blasted town out in the California desert, and Peggy Newman fits right in — a woman trailing debts, old habits and a few unsettled scores. High Desert (2023) is the comedy you can watch online on iFILM.
After her mother dies — the same mother she shared a house and a life with — Peggy decides to reinvent herself as a private investigator. No training, no license, just nerve and zero brakes. Her cases turn messy, her circle is shady, and her common sense cuts out at the worst moments. The laughs come from Peggy herself, not the mystery: scattered, charming and impossible to steer.
Patricia Arquette carries the whole thing, with Matt Dillon, Brad Garrett and Rupert Friend filling out the cast and Jay Roach directing. It's a tragicomedy about someone scraping along the bottom and clawing upward in her own crooked, funny way. Worth a look if you like flawed heroines and humor with a bitter edge.
