Garry Shandling built Larry out of his own years behind a desk and plays him himself. His sidekick Hank Kingsley (Jeffrey Tambor) will shill any product for a check, while producer Artie (Rip Torn) bullies and flatters whoever stands between Larry and a smooth broadcast. The series lives in the dressing rooms and hallways, where the real fights are nastier than anything the audience sees.

The show pulled dozens of Emmy nominations and doubled as a talent factory: Judd Apatow, Bob Odenkirk, Janeane Garofalo and a young Jeremy Piven all pass through the credits. Shandling wrote a sharp, sour satire of television long before that tone became standard.
