The season refuses a straight line. It opens on the day itself — a Friday the 13th — then rewinds two years to assemble Candy piece by piece: a dull marriage, a tight church circle, a hunger for something that's hers alone. Running alongside is the thread of Betty Gore and her husband Allan, so you know where this lands long before you know how. Jessica Biel plays the cheerful neighbor whose smile is holding back a lot of pressure.
