Johan and Marianne look fine from the outside. Educated, comfortable, ten years together. Bergman spends six scenes dismantling that picture: an affair announced across the dinner table, an unwanted pregnancy, legal proceedings, screaming matches in empty apartments — and then, somewhere past the wreckage, something that might still be called love. Neither character is a villain. That's what makes it hard to watch.

Originally broadcast as a six-part television series on Swedish SVT before Bergman cut it into this theatrical version, the film became one of the most talked-about works in his catalogue.
