Synopsis
Winter Light (Nattvardsgästerna, 1963) is an Ingmar Bergman drama you can watch online on iFILM. In a cold rural parish, Swedish pastor Tomas Ericsson leads Sunday communion for a handful of worshippers, hollowed out by lost faith and lost will.
Since his wife died, God has gone silent, and that silence poisons everything he touches. Nearby is Märta, a schoolteacher who loves Tomas painfully, yet he stays cold toward her too. The whole film unfolds across a few winter hours. Gunnar Björnstrand, Ingrid Thulin and Max von Sydow lead the small cast.
This is the heart of Bergman's faith trilogy, sitting between Through a Glass Darkly and The Silence.
