Synopsis
The Passion of Anna (En passion, 1969) is a Swedish psychological drama directed by Ingmar Bergman — watch online on iFILM. Max von Sydow plays Andreas Winkelman, a divorced man living alone on an island, deliberately removed from any demand for connection. That arrangement unravels when he drifts into the orbit of his neighbours: architect Elis, his wife Eva (Bibi Andersson), and their friend Anna (Liv Ullmann).
Anna lost her husband and son in a car accident and carries the fact quietly, with almost no visible grief — which is what makes her so difficult to be near. Andreas gets drawn into relationships with both women, and neither brings him any closer to whatever he was looking for in solitude. Erland Josephson completes the foursome. Sven Nykvist shot the film in colour — Bergman's first sustained use of it — and the cold island light runs through every frame like an argument.
Bergman breaks the film open with a device almost no one else would attempt: he stops the story and interviews his own actors about the characters they are playing. It should not work. It does. Stream The Passion of Anna (1969) on iFILM.
