Synopsis
Kansas City (1996) is Robert Altman's jazz-soaked crime drama, set over one long night in 1934, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The local machine runs the elections; the mob runs everything else.
Blondie (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a movie-mad wife of a small-time crook, kidnaps the laudanum-hazed wife of a powerful politician to bargain for her husband's life — he's crossed Seldom Seen, a Black crime boss played by Harry Belafonte. Much of the film unfolds inside a smoky club where the band never stops, as the two women circle each other in a strange, tense standoff. Miranda Richardson, Steve Buscemi and Dermot Mulroney round out the cast.
Altman built this as a love letter to his hometown, packed with marathon jam sessions, ward politics and his trademark overlapping talk. It's a mood piece more than a thriller — come for the music and the period detail. Stream Kansas City online on iFILM.
