Synopsis
Hungry Wives (1972) is an early George Romero horror-drama you can watch online on iFILM. Made between Night of the Living Dead and his zombie classics, it trades monsters for something quieter: a suburban housewife suffocating inside a comfortable, empty life.
Joan Mitchell, played by Jan White, is past forty. Her husband is distant, her daughter has grown, and every day folds into the last. Then the nightmares start — hands reaching out of the dark, a figure watching from the corner. Hunting for any scrap of control, Joan visits a local fortune teller and begins dabbling in witchcraft, until the line between a ritual and a breakdown quietly dissolves.
The dread here grows out of boredom, anxiety and the frustration of a 1970s woman with nowhere to put herself. Romero called it one of his most personal films. Slow, strange and pointedly feminist for its era. Stream Hungry Wives (1972) online on iFILM.
