Synopsis
The Other (1972) is Robert Mulligan's quiet rural horror film, available to watch online on iFILM. It unfolds over one hot Connecticut summer in 1935, on a family farm.
Niles and Holland are identical twins with opposite tempers — one gentle and dreamy, the other sharp and cruel. Their father is recently dead, their mother rarely leaves her room, and their grandmother Ada (Uta Hagen) keeps the household together. She has also taught Niles a strange game: how to slip his mind into another living thing. As the summer wears on, the farm is visited by a string of deaths that feel anything but accidental.
Mulligan skips the monster and builds a slow psychological thriller instead, letting dread seep out of ordinary things — sunlit fields, hay, children at play. Thomas Tryon adapted the script from his own novel, and the late twist is still ranked among the more unsettling endings of seventies cinema. One for viewers who prefer horror that creeps up rather than jumps out. Stream The Other (1972) online on iFILM.
