Synopsis
Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop (サイダーのように言葉が湧き上がる, 2021) is a Japanese animated film directed by Kyohei Ishiguro — watch it online on iFILM. Two teenagers who struggle to communicate find each other over one slow, sun-bleached summer: a boy who hides behind headphones and speaks only in haiku, and a girl who masks her face and saves her real self for the camera.
Cherry — real name too embarrassing to say out loud — composes five-line poems in lieu of sentences. Smile runs a popular online channel but freezes up in actual conversation. When they cross paths at a shopping mall, what brings them closer is a small, oddly sweet mission: tracking down a vinyl record an elderly man has been looking for. Studio Signal.MD fills every frame with pastel brightness and a pop-inflected score that matches the mood of the season exactly.
For a film about people who can't quite say what they mean, it turns out to be surprisingly direct about what loneliness and connection feel like at seventeen. Stream Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop (2021) on iFILM.
