Love Letter

Love Letter (ラブレター, 1995) is a Japanese romantic drama from director Shunji Iwai that you can watch online on iFILM. Two years after her fiancé Itsuki Fujii died in a mountain accident, Hiroko still can't close that chapter. On a strange impulse she writes a letter to his old address — a house long since demolished, a road running through where it stood.

The letter finds someone. It turns out a woman in Itsuki's hometown shares his name exactly: a former classmate, also called Itsuki Fujii. The two begin exchanging letters, and through the classmate's memories of their school years, Hiroko starts building a picture of the boy she loved that she never had before.

Iwai shot the film in Hokkaido, and the island's winter landscapes become something more than backdrop — snow as the texture of grief and distance. The film became a quiet phenomenon in Japan and established Iwai as one of the defining voices of 1990s Japanese cinema. It asks for patience, and rewards it.
