Synopsis
Creation (2009) is a British biographical drama directed by Jon Amiel that you can watch online on iFILM. Paul Bettany plays Charles Darwin at the point where the manuscript of On the Origin of Species is essentially done — and Darwin cannot bring himself to publish it.
The delay isn't writer's block. It's everything around him: his devoutly religious wife Emma, played by Jennifer Connelly, who fears what the theory will do to their marriage and their faith; the recurring grief over their daughter Annie, who died at ten; and his own deteriorating health. Annie haunts the film — Darwin keeps revisiting her in memory, using the work as a way to stay in conversation with a child he couldn't save. Bettany and Connelly are a real-life couple, and their scenes together carry a weight that scripted conflict rarely produces. Benedict Cumberbatch appears in a supporting role.
Amiel doesn't frame this as a battle between science and religion. It's a portrait of what it costs a person to release an idea into the world when the idea changes everything. Stream Creation online on iFILM.
