City on Fire

City on Fire (龍虎風雲, 1987) is a Hong Kong crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Director Ringo Lam stripped the action genre down to its pressure points, and Chow Yun-Fat — not yet the international star he would become — carries every scene on pure physical presence.

Ko Chow (Chow Yun-Fat) is an undercover detective embedded in a gang of jewel thieves, running out of time on every front: his inspector wants an arrest, his girlfriend is leaving Hong Kong, and the criminals he has infiltrated have become his actual friends. The final robbery brings every obligation to a single moment.

Quentin Tarantino reproduced the climactic standoff sequence almost scene-for-scene in Reservoir Dogs (1992), which cemented City on Fire's reputation in international film circles.
