Synopsis

The Long Walk Home (1990) is a historical drama by Richard Pearce you can watch online on iFILM. The setting is Montgomery, Alabama, in the cold opening months of 1955.

Odessa Cotter (Whoopi Goldberg) cleans house for the well-off, white Thompson family. When the city's Black residents stop riding the segregated buses, she has no way to reach work except on foot — miles there, miles back, in any weather. Her employer, Miriam (Sissy Spacek), starts driving her, at first only to keep her maid. That quiet arrangement slowly pulls both women toward a line they had spent their lives avoiding.

The boycott itself plays out in the background — months of empty seats and a young preacher the whole country is about to hear of. What carries the film is the acting: Goldberg and Spacek work in low, careful registers, and the restraint is exactly what gives the late scenes their punch. A solid pick if you like dramas built on small decisions with a high price. Stream The Long Walk Home (1990) online on iFILM.
