Synopsis
HBO's Looking (2014), Season 1 — eight episodes, watch online on iFILM — follows three gay friends in San Francisco, each stuck in a different kind of rut. Patrick learns his ex just got engaged and tentatively starts dating Richie. Agustín moves in with his boyfriend Frank. Dom turns forty and starts talking seriously about opening a Portuguese chicken restaurant.
The season builds through small moments rather than dramatic turns. Patrick's new boss Kevin keeps showing up in ways that complicate things with Richie. Agustín gets fired, takes on an ethically murky art project, and picks more and more fights with Frank. Dom forms a business and possibly personal connection with Lynn, an older man who could back the restaurant idea. The season closes at a family wedding where Patrick introduces Richie to people he's never had to explain himself to before.
Season 1 is quieter than most prestige TV. What it does well is the specific texture of your thirties — old enough to know what you want, not sure enough to go get it. Stream Looking Season 1 online on iFILM.
