Synopsis
Jasper Jones (2017) is an Australian mystery drama directed by Rachel Perkins, available to watch online on iFILM. It's the mid-1960s in a drowsy Western Australian town when a knock comes at bookish fourteen-year-old Charlie's window. The town's outcast, Jasper Jones, needs his help — and once Charlie gives it, there's no going back.
Jasper has found his girlfriend Laura dead and is sure that he, a mixed-race kid everyone already blames for everything, will hang for it the moment the body surfaces. So the two boys set out to name the real killer themselves. While Charlie untangles someone else's secret, his own world tilts: the racism simmering in town, the Vietnam War far away, his parents' fraying marriage, and a first crush on Eliza, Laura's younger sister. Levi Miller, Angourie Rice, Toni Collette and Hugo Weaving carry it all in low, careful registers.
Adapted from Craig Silvey's novel, a fixture on Australian school reading lists, the film keeps a coming-of-age pitch where the whodunit is really an excuse to talk about guilt, fear of the outsider and the buried secrets of a small town. Stream Jasper Jones (2017) online on iFILM.
