Synopsis
Crime Diaries: The Candidate (2019) is a Mexican political thriller from Netflix you can watch online on iFILM. It reopens the case of Luis Donaldo Colosio, the front-runner for Mexico's presidency who was gunned down at a campaign rally in the spring of 1994.
The series runs on two tracks. One follows a kid from Sonora climbing from grassroots organizer to senator and cabinet minister, and finally to his party's pick for the top job. The other picks up after that lethal evening: Colosio's terminally ill widow refuses to accept the tidy lone-gunman story and starts pulling at every thread the official inquiry would rather leave alone.
At its core this is a story of private grief slamming into the machinery of the state. The Mexican cast, led by Jorge A. Jiménez and Ilse Salas, plays it raw rather than glossy, and the real killing it dramatizes has never been fully resolved. If true-crime politics is your lane, this one lands hard.
