Synopsis
Dark Victory (1939) is a classic Hollywood melodrama from director Edmund Goulding, available to watch online on iFILM. Bette Davis takes the lead in a role she counted among the finest of her career.
Judith Traherne is a wealthy socialite whose days revolve around horses, parties and admirers. Beneath the glamour sits an emptiness she barely notices — until the fainting spells and blurred vision begin. Doctor Frederick Steele delivers the verdict: a brain tumor. Surgery seems to hand Judith her life back, and a romance blossoms between patient and physician. But Steele keeps one truth to himself: the illness will return, and the bride-to-be has far less time than her newfound happiness suggests.
Beside Davis stand a young Humphrey Bogart as a stable master quietly in love with her, and future president Ronald Reagan in a small part. The picture landed among that year's Oscar nominees, Davis included for Best Actress, and it still stands as a benchmark for the Warner Bros. "woman's picture" of the late 1930s. For anyone who loves old-Hollywood melodrama without the sugary fakery, it's a direct hit. Stream Dark Victory (1939) online on iFILM.
