Synopsis
Murphy's War (1971) is Peter Yates' war drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Peter O'Toole stars as Murphy, a Royal Navy mechanic left as the only survivor after a German U-boat guns down his crew in the dying days of the Second World War.
Rescued and patched up at a remote mission station near the mouth of the Orinoco in Venezuela, Murphy can't let it go. Everyone else treats the war as finished. He treats it as unfinished business with one specific submarine. With help from the local oil-company administrator, he salvages a wrecked seaplane and sets out, alone, to sink a warship that has no reason to fear a single obsessed man.
Yates skips the glory of combat and films something colder: how revenge hollows a man out once there's nothing left to fight for. O'Toole carries long stretches almost without dialogue, with Siân Phillips and Philippe Noiret alongside him. Stream Murphy's War (1971) online on iFILM.
