Synopsis
The Hospital (1971) is Arthur Hiller's pitch-black comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. George C. Scott plays Dr. Bock, chief of medicine at a Manhattan hospital whose private life has caved in — wife gone, kids silent, and a man quietly planning his own end.
Then the doctors start dying. An intern turns up dead in a hospital bed, another physician follows hours later, and both deaths reek of malpractice, maybe murder. Teetering on a breakdown, Bock falls for Barbara, the daughter of a comatose patient who might pull him back to life or drag him somewhere worse. Diana Rigg gives her a strange, electric calm.
Paddy Chayefsky wrote the script and took home an Oscar for it, channeling the same venom toward institutions he'd later unleash in Network. This is satire aimed at medicine, bureaucracy and a whole generation's exhaustion, the kind where the laugh sticks in your throat. Made for anyone who loves smart, sour 1970s cinema.
