Synopsis
Wolf Hall (2015) is a BBC historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. England, the late 1520s: Henry VIII wants out of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Rome refuses, and the throne wobbles toward civil war.
Out of the shadows steps Thomas Cromwell, a blacksmith's son who claws his way to the king's right hand. Mark Rylance plays him in near-whispers, every calculation tucked behind a still face. Damian Lewis is a Henry who can turn from tender to lethal between sentences. Claire Foy's Anne Boleyn is the woman for whom a church gets broken. Cromwell reads people better than anyone at court, and that gift keeps his head on his shoulders while others lose theirs.
Director Peter Kosminsky adapted Hilary Mantel's Booker-winning novels, shooting whole scenes by candlelight with almost no artificial light. The result feels damp, cold and real, far from the usual polished costume drama. If lavish period pieces leave you cold, this restraint is the draw. Stream Wolf Hall (2015) online on iFILM.
