Synopsis
Bleak House (2005) is a BBC miniseries adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel you can watch online on iFILM. Directors Justin Chadwick and Susanna White brought the sprawling Victorian drama to the screen, with Anna Maxwell Martin, Gillian Anderson and Charles Dance in the lead roles.
Young orphan Esther Summerson arrives at the estate of the generous John Jarndyce, whose life is consumed by the interminable lawsuit of Jarndyce v Jarndyce — a dispute over an inheritance that has dragged through the courts for generations without resolution. Around Esther, lives intersect: restless Richard, unable to commit to anything; the composed Ada; and the untouchable Lady Dedlock, whose carefully buried past attracts the cold attention of the lawyer Tulkinghorn. What he unearths threatens to unravel far more than a legal case.
This 15-part adaptation covers the full sweep of the novel without sacrificing the smaller characters that make Dickens' world feel populated. A young Carey Mulligan appears in an early role, and Gillian Anderson plays Lady Dedlock as someone managing constant, quiet dread.
