Synopsis
Reinventing Marvin (Marvin ou la belle éducation, 2017) is a French drama from director Anne Fontaine that you can watch online on iFILM. A boy from a poor village in northern France grows up a stranger among his own — too quiet, too gentle — and gets punished for it at school and at home alike.
His father drinks, his mother lashes out, the other kids use their fists. Rescue arrives almost by accident: a headmistress sees something in Marvin and steers him toward the stage. Theatre becomes the door he can walk through to leave the old life behind and rebuild himself from scratch. The film cuts between two timelines — Jules Porier as the bullied teenager in the village, Finnegan Oldfield as the grown Marvin shaping that pain into a one-man show in Paris. Isabelle Huppert turns up too, playing herself.
The script loosely follows Édouard Louis's autobiographical novel The End of Eddy. This isn't a story about getting even; it's about a person reinventing himself, and the price of escaping a world that hates you for who you are. Quiet, hard-edged cinema for anyone drawn to European art-house. Stream Reinventing Marvin (2017) online on iFILM.
