Synopsis
The Forgiven (2018) is Roland Joffé's drama-thriller, and you can watch online on iFILM. Forest Whitaker plays Archbishop Desmond Tutu in the raw years after South Africa began dismantling its system of racial segregation.
Tutu chairs the commission that hears out both killers and the families they wrecked. Behind bars waits Piet Blomfeld (Eric Bana), a cold-blooded murderer from the far-right underground who might be chasing redemption — or just toying with the clergyman. Their conversations through the cell door harden into a duel over guilt, forgiveness and how far mercy can stretch.
Joffé, the director of The Killing Fields and The Mission, shapes this as a chamber piece drawn from Michael Ashton's stage play. The Whitaker–Bana standoff is the reason to show up: two heavyweight actors with barely a set to lean on. Heavy, slow-burning cinema for anyone pulled in by questions of blame and reconciliation.
