Synopsis
The Front Page (1931) is a fast-talking comedy from director Lewis Milestone you can watch online on iFILM — adapted from the hit Broadway play by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. Reporter Hildy Johnson (Pat O'Brien) is one shift away from quitting newspapers for good when a convicted murderer escapes custody and lands right in his lap.
Hildy hides the fugitive in a roll-top desk while editor Walter Burns (Adolphe Menjou) schemes to keep him on the story at any cost. The satire hits hard: the press corps is idle and self-serving, the justice system is tangled in politics, and the courtroom is basically a stage. The play was remade twice more — most famously as His Girl Friday in 1940 — but Milestone's original captures the machine-gun dialogue at its rawest. Stream The Front Page online on iFILM.
