Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Put yourself in her place! The dreaded night when her lover became a madman!
Synopsis
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) is a landmark American horror drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Rouben Mamoulian. This pre-Code Hollywood adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel still carries a charge that later versions rarely matched — partly because the studio hadn't yet figured out what it wasn't allowed to show.
Dr. Henry Jekyll is a respected London physician with a theory: good and evil exist as separate forces within every person, and chemistry can pull them apart. The formula works. Hyde emerges — violent, predatory, and wearing Fredric March's face in a shape no one in Victorian England is ready for. Miriam Hopkins plays Ivy, the showgirl closest to the danger, and Rose Hobart the fiancée who sees nothing until it's almost too late.
March took home the Academy Award for Best Actor for this dual performance, and the transformation sequences — pulled off with optical tricks and on-camera makeup changes, no digital tools of any kind — are still remarkable to watch. Stream Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) online on iFILM.
