Synopsis
East/West (Est-Ouest, 1999) is a French-Russian drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Régis Wargnier. Catherine Deneuve, Sandrine Bonnaire and Oleg Menshikov lead a co-production that centres on one of Stalin-era history's bleaker traps.
In the summer of 1946, Soviet broadcasts promised exiled Russians a clean slate if they came home. Doctor Alexei Golovin took the offer seriously and sailed back with his French wife Marie, played by Bonnaire, whose passport was seized the moment the ship docked. Some passengers never left the port alive. The Golovins were allowed to settle in Kyiv — under permanent surveillance, with no path out. Sergei Bodrov Jr. plays a young swimmer willing to risk everything to get Marie's message West, through a visiting French actress played by Deneuve.
The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Stream East/West (1999) online on iFILM: it is methodical where most Cold War thrillers are breathless, and that slowness is deliberate — captivity here is measured in years, not minutes.
