Synopsis
The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) is an A24 drama directed by Joe Talbot — watch it online on iFILM. Jimmie Fails, playing a version of himself, is fixated on a Victorian house in the Fillmore district that his grandfather supposedly built decades ago. Someone else lives there now, but Jimmie still comes by to repaint the trim and tend the garden beds.
His best friend Mont, played by Jonathan Majors, tags along without complaint, quietly sketching the world around them. That world is caving in: rents spiral, longtime neighbors disappear, and the city Jimmie feels he belongs to seems to have already decided he doesn't. Rob Morgan and Danny Glover appear in supporting roles.
Talbot shot the film on a micro-budget, with Fails co-writing from his own life, and it landed the Sundance directing prize before A24 picked it up. What makes it stick is the lack of easy resolution — it's a film about grief for a place, and it refuses to make that grief comfortable. Stream The Last Black Man in San Francisco online on iFILM.
