Synopsis

The two men barely kept in touch while their father was alive. Now they're standing side by side with shovels in hand, and everything unsaid for decades starts coming out with the dirt. Old grievances, competing versions of the same childhood, and a complicated love for a man who failed them both in different ways. A handful of strangers showing up at the burial — among them characters played by Maribel Verdú and Sophie Okonedo — adds new layers to what the brothers thought they already knew.
McGregor and Hawke make it look easy. Their back-and-forth has the loose, unforced rhythm of people who actually know each other, and the film is wise enough not to wrap the grief up neatly.
