Synopsis
The Last Bus (2021) is Gillies MacKinnon's quiet British drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. Tom has just buried Mary, his wife of a lifetime, and decides on a strange kind of pilgrimage: to cross the whole of Britain by local bus, using nothing but his free pensioner's pass.
A battered suitcase holds Mary's ashes as Tom travels from the far north of Scotland down to the southern tip of Cornwall, back to the place where they were once young. The journey is built from small encounters — drivers, schoolkids, strangers whose brief stories add up to a portrait of a country. Without ever meaning to, the soft-spoken old man becomes a news sensation. Timothy Spall plays Tom almost wordlessly, with his eyes and a stooped back, and it's enough to put a lump in your throat.
