Penguin Bloom

Penguin Bloom (2021) is an Australian drama based on a true story — stream it online on iFILM. Naomi Watts plays Sam Bloom, who falls from a balcony during a family holiday in Thailand and comes home partially paralysed. Her husband Cameron (Andrew Lincoln) and their three boys try to hold everything together, but Sam has gone somewhere none of them can reach.

Then her eldest son smuggles home an injured baby magpie. They call it Penguin. The bird is loud, relentless, and completely indifferent to Sam's grief — and that, oddly, is the point. Director Glendyn Ivin keeps the film honest: recovery here is slow and uneven, not tidy. Jackie Weaver plays Sam's mother with enough edge to keep the whole thing from tipping into easy comfort.

Adapted from the memoir by Cameron Bloom and Bradley Trevor Greive, the film earned Watts some of the strongest notices of her recent work. It is quiet where most feel-good dramas would reach for a swell; that restraint is what makes it land. Watch Penguin Bloom (2021) online on iFILM.
