Synopsis
High Society (1956) is an MGM musical comedy directed by Charles Walters that you can watch online on iFILM. Grace Kelly plays Tracy Lord, a socialite days away from her second wedding. Her ex-husband Dexter (Bing Crosby) shows up with a jazz festival, a plan, and a reporter — Frank Sinatra — who's supposed to cover the wedding but ends up doing something more complicated.
Louis Armstrong and his band arrive to play the festival Dexter is throwing right next door to Tracy's estate, and at one point all four stars share the screen together. In 1956, that billing alone was the event. Kelly was making her final film — within months of the premiere she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco and stepped away from Hollywood for good. Cole Porter wrote the original songs, including the Crosby-Sinatra duet "Well, Did You Evah!" — a number so effortlessly charming it still earns its own applause.
The screenplay by John Patrick drew on Philip Barry's play, which had already produced The Philadelphia Story in 1940. This version adds music and trades some of the original's sharper edges for pure pleasure. Celeste Holm and Louis Calhern fill out a supporting cast that knows exactly how to play this material.
